For many years the
marina was operated by two sisters, Edna Brown and Jo Didriksen,
helped out by Edna's son Gary. Gary died suddenly in 1994.
Then in March 1995, Edna died suddenly. The marina's future
became a matter of speculation, but for three years Jo Didriksen
kept it going. In 1997 Edna's son Lorne Brown came up to
help. We met Lorne when we stayed overnight at the marina
that year, and found him to be an extremely likeable, helpful
and good-hearted man.
In 1998
Lorne's wife Shawn moved up, and their teenage son Robert
worked as a dock boy during the summer. Lorne set up an
Alaska sawmill (a big chain saw mounted on guides), and
cut new decking for the docks. One of the docks was extended
to accommodate more boats. A water line was led to the docks.
A second generator was brought in, and now they have 15
& 30 amp power for visiting boats. Buildings were repainted,
the small store restocked, and Shawn is doing some baking.
The laundry has been expanded, showers and exercise equipment
added, and a Canine Yacht Club station established. Pancake
breakfasts on the deck are becoming regular fare.
Jo Didriksen
is staying on, to welcome her longtime friends. We chatted
with Jo when we visited in June 1998. Those who have known
Jo from years past will be pleased to hear that she looked
good.
